Spellborn - Gaming gets personal

I found this comment of interest as I was perusing the Spellborn forums...

Straight from the Dev's mouth (and communicated by the CM of course...lol)...

"We have mentioned ... in a couple of places. So far for PvE biggest group is 4 people and we do not intend to increase it, so far for PvP biggest group is 8. We also do not intend to have EQ/WoW style raids - that sort of thing where you need numbers to be able to do it.

Regarding the goals in game, it is a bit that sort of thing what people do in games which do not have raiding. PvP, small group content, generally quests and so on - with rewards for it that make sense in our game system (both good looking gear and sigils, as well as personal statues for achievements.)"

Would you play an MMO that goes for a more personal touch? Smaller groupings, no raids. Gee, a game that does not flaunt "end game" even.

Impressions?

I've been following this since... maybe 2005? For a long time, to say the least.

The notion that it would focus on small-groups and story over grinding, is what's always attracted me to it. You may notice that they also say you won't get much experience at ALL from actual game mobs. The bulk of progression comes from quests.

Rest assured, many quests will be all about killing foozles, but they have an interesting mechanic planned to allow time-travel and whatnot for the sake of story.

It's one to watch, really. But from what I've seen, the interface/controls/etc. will take some getting used to.

I'm anxious to play the free-portion this winter.

Then again, a certain vocal set of players will whine like there's no tomorrow over the minimal/zero XP per kill.

LOTRO also has reduced mob XP, but gives it back in spades upon quest completion. The "I'd rather grind mobs than quest" crowd complained and complained over it. Boo hoo.

I'm still on the fence over the art style. The new stuff seems better, but the older screenies and videos seemed very WoW-influenced.

This I would like to see explained...
I have NEVER seen that comment and Spellborn in the same sentence.

Is it the color schemes?

Interesting and very uncommon notation.

I am all for small group content. If content is not instanced or not limited to one group only I do not have a problem with a group size of four.

But in heavily instanced games like City of Heroes/Villains and Guild Wars it would have been a bit limiting to have only 4 in a group, if content would be limited to one group.

But in CoX everything scales with the group size and difficulty setting and in GW you have the henchmen/heroes to fill out any emply slots if you have any.

I certainly do not miss any lack of "end game" raiding a la WoW.

I'd likely never find the first video I ever saw, but my first thought was that the city looked very Stormwind-ish. Bizarro Stormwind, I suppose. Other screenshots at the time, and even the first PvP video pretty much kept that same opinion of WoW-styled art.
